Reading for Progress

"The more that you read, the more things you will know.
The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."

CHS Reading Strategy

All students will read in all subject areas, from both fiction and non fiction sources as part of the formal curriculum.

Reading is a core skill for educational progress. It is not limited by subject area. It is a life skill we all must nurture, as we work as a school to create students who are global citizens, ready to face the challenges of the modern world.

Educational Research both pre and post COVID 19 has verified that students who access reading for at least 20 minutes each day, will achieve higher levels of progress across the curriculum, in standardised testing.

Commencing in June 2022, all students will have an additional 20 minute lesson, immediately after tutor time each day. They will remain with their form tutor and they will be read to from a fiction text selected for all students in that year group. Details of the current texts can be found below.

All KS3 students will use Accelerated Reader and Star Reading Tests to track and improve reading progress. Year 7 & 8 students will have a fortnightly library lesson to support imbedding good reading habits.

All students are expected to carry a private reading book with them when they are at school. This should be a 'live' text that they are currently reading.

If you have any questions about reading, using the library or library lessons please do not hesitate to email Miss Hanson here
