D of E presentations with our Governors

Over the past year, a number of students have been working on their Gold, Silver, and Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Awards. This involved students undertaking expeditions in various locations including the South Downs, New Forest, Brecon, and the Lake District. These expeditions ranged from two days to five days, with students walking an average of 7 hours each day while carrying all the equipment needed to set up a campsite and prepare food.

In addition to the expeditions, students have learned new skills across a wide range of areas. Many have developed digital skills using the sponsored IBM website, learned new languages and sign language, and participated in sports such as badminton, netball, and horse riding. Additionally, many students took the opportunity to join the CCF (Combined Cadet Force) or after-school clubs to gain new skills.

As part of the program, students are required to complete a volunteer section, which involves a minimum commitment of one hour per week for a duration of 3 to 12 months, depending on the award. This led to over 1,000 hours of volunteer work in the past year. Students contributed in various ways, from working in charity shops and cafés to supporting animal shelters, the RNLI center in Selsey, and helping local residents with dog walking and gardening.

Overall, it has been a busy year, with 32 students receiving their certificates from the school governors, and several students expected to collect their Gold awards from the Palace in the spring of 2025. A few students are still working to complete their awards in the coming months.

Next year promises to be just as active, with the highest number of Bronze award students signing up for Silver that the school has seen in recent years.

Many thanks to all the people who have supported the students during their expeditions and after-school clubs.
